How to play Warcraft 3 and Reforged?
Warcraft 3 (Reforged) is the best game in the world! 😀
Read here how to get the game and what you need to know first.
How to download and play WC3 Reforged?
This is quite simple, you have two options:
- Download the Blizzard client, login and install Warcraft 3 with your verified Warcraft 3 CD key. Here is a WC3 Reforged installation tutorial for it.
- The second option is to just update your old Warcraft 3 client. The game will then ask you for all the necessary credentials to make it possible to update to Reforged (with old graphics).
What should I do if I have no valid CD Key for Warcraft 3?
A lot of players were not able to buy a CD key, but always had the possiblity to play WC3 on alternative servers, on LAN based communities or in the single player mode.
With Warcraft 3 reforged this is much harder, to keep on doing this, I recommend using an old WC3 patch like 1.26a, install it and don’t click ever on Battle.net, just use the LAN function with a community like RGC or play Dota Ai vs bots or WC3 custom games vs bots.
How to play Classic Warcraft 3? (Without Reforged)
Here again you have two options:
- Install any old WC3 patch like explained above (1.26a or 1.28) and don’t update the game. If you don’t ever go online you can stay on that version and use the platforms that still allow to play with this version (RGC, iccup, eurobattlenet).
- Another option is to use the PTR of Warcraft 3 version 1.31 which is still online. It may be taken offline someday, but while writing this in april 2020 it’s still online, you can join with friends, the server is not really full to be honest.
How to use Customkeys in Reforged?
Luckily in Warcraft 3 Reforged it got easier to use hotkeys. You can find the complete tutorial how to use customkeys in Warcraft 3 here.
How to play Warcraft 3 Reforged offline?
In the official client of Warcraft 3 reforged it’s super simple to play offline, for this just hit the options tab and logout. For more details find the quick guide how to play WC3 Reforged offline.
How to play Warcraft 3 Reforged on LAN?
To play Warcraft 3 Reforged on LAN, logout, as mentioned above, to join the offline area. Here you can use the Local Area Network together with the software Bonjour. If you can’t find it check out the WC3 Reforged LAN usage quick guide.
Can I play Warcraft 3 Reforged for free?
If you have an old valid Reign of Chaos or Frozen Throne CD Key, you are able to update the client to Warcraft 3 Reforged and there will be no costs for you. But you will only be able to play Reforged with the “old graphics” of WC3. Reforged is free for users with an old CD Key, but it’s not free if you have no key or if you want to play the new graphics.
How much does Warcraft 3 Reforged cost and is it worth the money?
Warcraft 3 Reforged costs $30 in the standart version and $40 for the Spoils of War edition. If you buy Reforged you are able to play the new graphics and to use the hero skin feature: view all WC3 Reforged skins here.
Is Reforged worth the money?
Yes it is, I recommend it for everyone who loves Warcraft. There is a lot of work Blizzard has put into this, which remasters Warcraft 3. Beside the graphics, new voice models and multiplayer options, you also get reworked cinematics and the great campaigns combined all together.
What is Warcraft 3 Reforged Spoils of War?
Spoils of War is an extra edition of Warcraft 3 Reforged, which includes extra digital goods. You get 4 hero skins for the Reforged graphics: Jaina, Thrall, Anub’arak and Tyrande. Moreover, the extras contain content for Starcraft 2, Diablo 3 and World of Warcraft.
“You get the Third War Card Back for Hearthstone®, the World of Warcraft® Meat Wagon mount, the legendary Heroes of the Storm™ heroes Jaina, Thrall, Anub’arak, and Tyrande, a Diablo® III pet, StarCraft® II console skins and the Spoils of War console skin for StarCraft®: Remastered.”
Will there be a Warcraft 4?
No, it will most likely be no topic in the next years. Blizzard decided to remaster Warcraft 3 with the title Reforged, which allows the game to overcome the problems of an old client. WC3 Reforged is based on a new client, which allows playing on new systems and even adds extra features and content.
Beginner Guide for Warcraft 3 Reforged:
First of all decide if you are a Warcraft 3 standart mode player or if you love to play Dota 1. Find the complete Dota 1 wiki and all maps here.
If you love to play WC3 in the classic versus mode with 1on1, 2on2, 3on3, 4on4 and FFA here are some beginner tips to start with. 🙂
Tips and Tricks for WC3 Reforged:
In the Warcraft 3 Reforged versus mode it can be quite challenging for all of the new players to get a good understanding of the game. To improve your gameplay try the following things:
Easy Tips for WC3 Reforged:
- After testing all of the races, pick one main race. You can find a list of the WC3 races below, to see the strengthens and weaknesses of each one. It’s better for every beginner to choose one race and to learn only this one to get good at it.
- Now when it comes to the game mode you can choose between 1on1, 2on2 random team, 3on3 random team, 4on4 random team and FFA.
3on3 and 4on4:
You should know that 3on3 and 4on4 are super casual modes, which allow to enjoy the game, but the skill is quite low. Never play these modes to learn the game or if you want to get better, they are just for simple entertainment.
Moreover, FFA is really special, only some like it: Each game takes about 60 minutes and is exhausting, but if you love to build mass gold mines, tower up, get 100 supply and win vs. 3 other players, go for it.
1on1 and 2on2:
The real game modes in Reforged that are skilled and reliable are 1on1 and 2on2. If you want to become a better player, focus on 1on1 OR 2on2 and spam games! 😉 Get addicted for one mode and master it, only then you will be able to get to know all of the maps, creeps, and items.
How to get better in WC3 Reforged?
If you have picked your main race and your favorite game mode like 1on1 or 2on2 the real learning phase can start. 😀 It’s time to master your race and to know everything in and out.
To get good in WC3 Reforged it’s about three things:
- Micro: Having good micro-management, which means how fast and good you are moving your units when fighting and creeping is the foundation of your skill.
The APM (actions per minute) defines how fast you are, to see this value just type /apm into the chat in an active game. The basic rules of micro are to lose no units at all and to take out enemy units at the same time.
By dealing with spells, items, and decisions of your opponents, you need to be rocket fast to adopt high micro skills.
- Macro: After taking care of your micro, it’s time to improve your macro, macro-management means the overall production of buildings, your economy, and production. It also means the rough movement of an army, like sending reinforcement.
Having a good macro might sound easy on the first sight, but the masterclass is to execute a well organized macro-management, while beeing in micro-management fights all over the time. To realize that, it’s essential to work with customkeys, as well as item hotkeys and to save a lot of buildings onto control groups.
- Map Awareness: The last and important point to put focus on is, to get the map under control in every single game.
For this, it is crucial to scout your enemy and to know which areas of the map he is caring for. Only like this, you will be able to take your advantage out of this. Get the important creep spots on the map, read the enemy, be prepared for attacks, and also know when you should tactically hit.
I hope these first tips will give you an awesome quick start for your competitive WC3 Reforged career! 🙂 To get better and better, in my opinion try to learn a perfect BO (build order) and test that BO for different play-styles in custom games.
Moreover, watch pro players like Grubby and improve the three abilities above in the long term!
The Four WC3 Races:
Strengthens and Weaknesses of each Race:
Pros: Powerful magic, very strategical options and playstyles. The human race snowballs and gets stronger if left undisturbed.
Cons: Very hard to macro, you need to do a lot of things and build a lot of buildings. Often two bases are required to win games.
Pros: Highly durable units in the early stages, simple executions are very strong like the usage of the Blademaster, perfect race for macro orientated players who can execute the same plays over and over again and put pressure onto the micro.
Cons: It’s not easy to build a good base layout. Moreover unit compositions are often limited to very little tactic variety.
Pros: Nightelfs got the most tactical variety options, they can mix any unit combinations. The moonwells are a great help for beginner players. Nightelf is good for creative players, hereos like Warden or Kotg often need a special plan to win the game. The ultimate spells of Nightelf are always super strong and have to be avoided for the opponent.
Cons: Nightelf is quite weak in the early game, the units got very low hp. Elfs can easily be harassed and the wisps and lumber productions is vulnerable at any time.
Pros: For beginners the macro is extremely easy, a simple Deathknight + Crypt Fiend build order with lich is easy to execute and powerful at the same time. The Undead hero combos, like the Coil + Nova + Impale combo is deadly and feared!
Cons: Undead armies are hard to micro if you mix it up a bit more. If units like statues, necros or banshees join, Undeads have a lot to do!
